Battle of Knits

I'm just trying to keep it real… while knitting.

I joined a congo…

http://hyenacart.com/Home2Home/ I joined the Home 2 Home Congo. I will be stocking my items with some other mamas who make diapers. There is some nice diapers and other things in the congo, so be sure and check it out! There is nothing more wonderful than cloth diapering… well, except supporting stay at home Moms!

I am going to let my Hyena Cart lapse, since it is cheaper to go with the congo and it easier to advertise when you have 7-8 other Moms helping! I can also focus more on stocking the congo. Stop by and check it out, tell me what you think!

$732.

$732… that is how much it is going to cost me to get 2 teeth pulled (if I am lucky enough to escape oral surgery). Of course you cannot just go in and get teeth pulled, you need x-rays and you have to pay for the exam– even if you are completely aware of the problem. So it adds up and for us it adds up to a big dollar amount… Yep, we are one of those families without health insurance. So not only do we have to make money appear out of nowhere, but I also have to go easy on the pain meds due to breastfeeding and I have to hope I can get an appointment on a Friday so that Josh can help me take care of our munchkin. I am dreading this. The cost, the procedure, the pain and the catch-up I will have to do on housework when I feel better.

The good news? Mercury retrograde ended this morning at 8:13 am. What’s this???

“Tuesday
Mercury is finally direct at 8:13 am, and the retrograde ends. On the day Mercury stations direct, it’s a good idea to be cautious and we have to expect lots of changes and possibly surprises. However, today the Moon and Jupiter meet for lucky breaks, optimistic feelings, and expansion plans! Take well thought out steps to bigger goals! The next few weeks are about getting things moving in the right direction again, clearing up Mercury retrograde misunderstandings, and initiating new things. Working toward deadlines is favored today, and collaborating may be the way to go. It’s also a day for designers, photographers, architects, and others who use vision and get the big picture and the smaller nuances of things. Aquarius, your focus is strong today. Pisces, dream up something big and make plans for sooner than later. Aries, travel, writing, and networking is in your forecast today. Going somewhere to gather information, attending a conference or event, and opening your mind to new things works well. Tonight, work out matters of friendship and get in some good focused study time. Wear yellow today.”

Pulled from Robin’s Zodiac Zone. Robin Ivy is one of my favorite astrologers/DJ’s. I used to listen to her in the EARLY am at work on WCYY when I lived in Maine and I still check her website constantly. Yep, I am one of those people who considers horoscopes before making big plans.

The owl.

We had a vistor today and I was lucky enough to get a few pictures of him. Please dont mind my terrible photo. I really need to get the flash fixed or at least play with the settings.

Owl, hunting squirrels, I hope.

“Here are a lot of superstitions associated with owls. Here are a few of them:  – If an owl lands on the roof of your house, it is an omen of death. Constant hooting near your house also foretells death.

 – If an owl hoots at the moment of childbirth, the child will have an unhappy life.

 – The Irish believe that if an owl flies into a house it must be killed immediately. If it escapes, it will take the luck of the house with it.

 – If an owl nests in an abandoned house, then the dwelling must be haunted. An owl is the only creature who can abide a ghost.

 – By eating salted owl, a person can be cured of gout.

 – If an owl hoots during a burial service, the deceased is bound to rise from the grave and haunt the living.

 – An owl living in the attic of a house will cause a pregnant woman to miscarry.

 – If a pregnant woman hears the shriek of an owl, her child will be a girl.”

I saw him fly into the tree and ran for the camera. I thought he was the hawk I saw a few weeks ago on the fence, but when I started snapping pics I realized it was not a hawk at all. I love owls, so this was really cool for me. Living next to a nature preserve has its drawbacks, like ticks and  pesky squirrels… but it is moments like this that I really enjoy it. Growing up in Maine I spent a lot of time in nature, playing in the woods, fishing, camping and hiking. Here in Florida you can do all those things, but it is hard to time things. The summer is too hot, Autumn brings too much rain, Winter is too cold and Spring is all there is left! Not to mention the spiders that make me want to scratch my skin off just thinking about them.

I finished the Austin Cowl to go with my Starry-Night-Star Crossed Beret. I enjoyed both projects. The beret took no time at all and the cowl was also a quick knit. I still have a little yarn left and I cant decide what to make yet… I was thinking a headband or even a cuff might be cool. I love the colors of this yarn.
Currently I am working on some longies for Laura, some Kai-Mei socks for Amanda, a Wallaby for my little love and a baby blanket for baby Mia who should arrive very soon. She is due in October and I really need to hustle to get it done in case she shows up early.
I want to make a Traveling Woman shawl soon. Not for me, for a gift, since I am not a shawl person… I would consider myself more of a stole or scarf person. Lace knitting is not really the most enjoyable thing for me yet, so I want to practice some more lace projects before I write it off completely.

First Crayons!

09-22-2009 011

First work of art.

It has been nice out these past couple days and my little guy has not felt like going out for very long. He has a sore throat and has lost most of his little voice… not that he really talks, but even his babbles and cries are weak. Poor kid. Well today since he is tired of the backyard, we went for a stroller-stroll and cruised the neighborhood, the took a break at the crappy playground. the playground may be cool one of these days, but for now it is really for bigger kids. He ran around it though! His interest was most caought by the tennis players and their backpacks sitting next to the fence. I had to giggle as I watched him try to put a rock in one of the tennis players backpacks. It was on the other side of the fence though and he could not quite reach.

(paused overnight… resumed on 09-23)

Well I think my son is finally feeling better. His voice seems better and there is no cough today. He had more energy while playing outside and he seems more like himself! YAY!

Meanwhile, he is napping so I must work on a crochet project and enjoy some peace, as I cook a tasty stew with chicken, veggies and beans. It smells so good I can hardly stop the drool.

Last night and Monday I enjoyed some good tv. Hell’s Kitchen was amusing as always, and Hero’s is looking like a good season, however I dont think I like the new carnie character. 90210 is rocking a new theme song and Annie is finally where I want her– bitchville! She was such a wet blanket last season. I am watching Melrose Place too, but I think it may get cancelled. Lets see what else? The Forgotten, with Christian Slater is the new Jerry Bruckheimer show… I like CSI, not as much as all the Law & Orders, but this new one was a little cheesy if you ask me. I much preferred My Own Worst Enemy, but I would watch Christian Slater if he was on an infomercial. He is my first love and always will be. (heart-heart-heart) I cant wait for Fringe– my fave show and the new Flash Forward is looking pretty interesting too. Tonight is the new L&O: SVU! Exciting. I am bummed though that on my DVR I can only record 2 shows at once… since tonight SVU is opposite Glee and  Modern Family/Cougar Town. Josh wont give up Glee, even though I find it so-so. It has a few funny moments, but a musical tv drama just does not do it for me… However, it does do it for Josh. So Glee it is. Maybe I can find the other two shows online or something. If I wasnt so lazy I would move the other tv so I could plug it into the cable. It just isnt worth it. Please, let me know what I miss!

Busted.

MMM. Hot coffee, fried eggs and grease from sausage patties wafting in the air of my open kitchen is making my house smell like a little breakfast diner. Unfortunately, the food was great, but the coffee was a no-go due to chunks in the creamer. Just another reason I should stick to the green tea.

My camera has some sort of affliction. The flash is not working for whatever reason and it is possibly the biggest tragedy in my life this year. I take pictures of everything and I feel a strong connection with my camera. I treat that camera as well as I treat my own son… and my camera ranks slightly higher than my dog. I love that thing. I use it daily and even though I can still take pictures without a flash I am not satisfied with that and I hope the issue is resolved soon. Josh is on the job trying to fix it or repair it. Until then… I feel broken.

I am waiting patiently for the sun to come out… the temp says 80 degrees and since it is cloudy out I know that I am in for some disgusting humidity if I do step outdoors. Inevitably though I will have to deal with it, since rain or shine, my son wants to play outside and I encourage it, since he needs to get the energy out of his system. Yesterday was the best day I have seen in a long time. The baby boy was having such a great time filling his pool and his water table, tossing toys in and then tossing them back out, running around the yard… then he was running out of steam and sat in the walkway, sitting on a stone playing with the sticks in the mulch. He went to stand up and somehow fell on his face, bumping himself on the stone step. I thought for sure he would have a black eye, since he had scrapes above and below his eye, but luckily it did not seem to bruise that much. It is slightly puffy, but not nearly as bad as I expected. The poor little guy! Of course I was taking pictures of his injury when my camera starting having its issues, so now I have a bumped up kid and a busted camera… just add that to chunky coffee creamer, it is the story of my life! I just cant win!

Am I getting sick?

It has been so long since I got sick, I cant even tell anymore! I dont feel so well. Yesterday and today… achy, tired, headache. I think this may be Swine Flu/H1N1 or whatever you want to call it. I just thought I was crabby from my time of the month. Unfortunately I think that I got Swine Flu from Josh, since my immune system was down this past week.

I am trying to stay on top of the sickness, since I cant ever let a virus win… so I am drinking lots of water, OJ and green tea. Eating lots of protein and veggies. This minute I am eating some homemade soup… here is my recipe.

Gluten-free, Wheat free FAST Chicken Curry Noodle Soup

Bowl full of rice noodles, 3/4 cup chicken broth (Kitchen), tsp olive oil, dash of curry powder, chopped cooked chicken breast.

Put ingredients in a micro-safe bowl and microwave about 3 minutes, Stir, let sit for 3 minutes, Stir, EAT.

I just want to lick the bowl! I appreciate rice noodles in a special way… since I cant have regular pasta and the corn pasta and quinoa pasta I have tried taste nasty, rice noodles are a beautiful thing. I think tomorrow I will make another chicken soup. This recipe I have in mind has chicken, curry and peanut butter. It is excellent, so I will find a link and post it.

Ack. I feel so terrible. Time to go curl up on the couch and watch General Hospital and enjoy my quiet time while baby sleeps.

Ugh, yeah… whatever! & happier stuff, I swear.

So let first say… Shut up. I am moody as hell lately. I went grocery shopping today and I was grumbling the whole time. So many stupid people in my way… talking on their cell phones, arguing about brands, or even just having a coughing fit. No empathy coming from me today. Just move!

I am also pissed off about my organic produce section. Last week and this week the tomatoes look like shit. How are am I supposed to enjoy my tacos with shitty tomatoes? And I am the idiot who is kicking herself for buying them anyway!!!!!!!! WTF is my problem? I am paranoid about pesticides and GMO’s, so sue me… but I hate the fact that I put my shitty tomatoes in the cart and then walk past the genetically altered and soaked in pesticide tomatoes that look so wonderful. Stupid bitch tomatoes. Just die. Rot and friggin die.

Okay, enough negitive. On a positive note I have a new project in the works… Laura a good internet & crafty friend has mailed me some yarn! We traded diapers for woolies… so I have the honor of making her newborn baby doll some woolies. She had a big baby the first time aorund, so these will be size 3-6 ish. I love the colors and cant wait to get started… as if I need another project, but I cannot resist a new baby, you know? :) super smiley!

I am twittering again after a bit of a sporadic hiatus. I love twitter. No ads, no bullshit. Sometimes I get follower spam, but not lately. I love random anything… especially random twittering tweets. You never know what you will find and that is the draw… plus I have this need to share with strangers. I am not an exhibitionist in the general sense of the word, but I do love to share… Twitter-bitionsist? Blogger-bitionist? Whatever! (Shut up.)

My son is adapting well to the Cry It Out method and I am forever greatful. I do miss him dearly, but I love stretching out on my half of the bed, I love not nursing all night long and waking up feeling like my nipples were dipped in a piranha tank, I love the way I feel after a full nights sleep and most of all… I love how my son seems so happy, despite how sad/mad he seems after being put down for bed. I relaly like the way I appreciate our daytime sessions now. they are so much more meaningful.

Okay off to drain my DVR… its time for reality tv and more jello-shots. ? Que`? Jello shots you say? Yes, I made jello shots. I had this pesky bottle of Cruzan Coconut Rum in my freezer for about 3 years and I made jello shots hoping to drain the damn thing. There is like a 1/2 cup left (maybe) and I cant bring myself to dump it (alcohol abuse is so wrong) and so the damn thing will clog my friggin freezer for much longer than I anticipated. It just wont die. For what it is worth though, I made some KICK ASS jello shots! Strawberry-banana jello with coconut rum and vodka… oh DELISH! SO just shut up already. I hate Aunt Flow. Screw her.

Manual progress bars…

I give up for today… I tried to get my progress bars up, but no luck… so I am going to post my projects manually.

Austin Cowl

I am really enjoying this project. It is a simple cowl with a simple cable and I think most of the enjoyment is coming from this yarn. BFL leftovers from my Star-Crossed Beret.

Weave in some ends and this sweet thing is up for sale! I think I will list at http://www.hyenacart.com/battleofknits.com
as soon as I am done. So fun to make, this yarn is luchious! I just want to wrap myself in it!

This has become one of my fave patterns for blanket squares recently. Find it here August square! Weave in the ends and Voila! Done, well… just 4 more squares to go…. then done!

Kai-Mei

These are for Amanda. She is a great friend and I want to make her some kick ass socks! Originally these were going to be “Monkey” socks, but I had to rip them back after a boo-boo. Since I had just bought the Cookie A. Sock Innovation book, I decided I wanted to make the “Kai-Mei” socks. The pattern is very “innovative” and also seems like something I would make more than once! These are socks to remember! I thought they would be difficult and I won’t lie… I have asked for help on Rav forums a few times (since I am into the chart now, father than this pic shows) but so far, so good!

Newborn size soaker!

OH EM GEE This is adorable! A BFL soft and sturdy soaker for a newborn baby! I adore the colors and hope to make a small and possibly a medium from this same yarn! Expect them up for sale soon, note me if you would like to see it sooner, I can make it a priority for you!

Pheasant Run Sock

This sock is a thorn in my side right now… it seemed like every time I got a repeat done, my son was grabbing it off the table and pulling needles out… So I put it up… VERY HIGH UP! And I have not rouched them since. I really want to finish them though, I love them. So, I started the ribbing for the second sock. I have decided the dining room table and the table in our bedroom are no longer same places for knitting projects. I am limited to the fourth shelf up on the bookshelf, the top shelf in the walk-in closet and the breakfast bar. It seems anything below 4 feet is fair game. This child keeps getting taller-and-taller!

Today I am trying to get quick rows in while watching the game… Gators vs. Troy.

How I spent my 9-11 day in 2009

Since I suck at “FLYing” (see Flylady) and I cannot decide between cleaning the hellacious (spell check) mess in my bathroom or folding the massive pile of laundry stuffed tightly into a basket…  I am going to blog instead. Procrastinantion always wins. Why? There is always plenty of time for it “later,” but right now I want to enjoy the quiet of a sleeping baby and expose my life to the wonderful world wide internet.

(Random news) All morning my left arm has had that shaky “lame” and weak feeling, I think I may have slept on it all night long. Ugh. Anyway… The weather has been undeniably perfect for the past few days… very little rain, lots of sun, mid 80’s and no humidity. We have even had the pleasure of having a slight breeze here and there! So the Boo-bear and I have been outside constantly. This is good for many reasons:

  1. Outside play makes a tired toddler–FAST
  2. I need a tan.
  3. The dog gets to have fun too!
  4. It makes our days go by faster.
  5. Exercise for all!

Future Fireman!

So we have pulled out the kiddie pool, the hose, the water table and all the water-proof toys and we have been having a blast! I let to kiddo fill up the pool and water table since he would rather play with the hose than anything else anyway and I get to snap pictures of him and the random flowers in the yard.

09-11-2009 040

Party foul.

The water was chilly, but he still played for about 45 minutes. Then he decided to follow Mommy around the yard, when he was bored of that, he stole the dog’s dishes and took them to the pool. I finally took him inside and fed him some lunch… he fell directly asleep after that.

Speaking of sleep… Things have changed a lot at our house. We have decided co-sleeping is not the most wonderful thing in the world anymore. As much as I love it, I also understand that my tiny little baby has grown into a toddler. He is about half the size of me now and when he cannot sleep he kicks, head butts and sits up in bed crying. So after 16 months of not sleeping well, I have given up my position as the sleep-less-martyr-Mommy and I have joined the ranks of the well-rested happy Moms! How did I do this? A little thing called “Cry-It-Out”! Yes… I am one of those Mom’s now. Josh and I talked about it and we hated and hated to do it. After about two weeks of him crying for about an hour until finally falling asleep in his own room, last night was wonderful… he did not even cry for 10 minutes! I also slept like a baby. I feel like a new person… one who gets 8 hours of sleep! It is the best feeling I have had in a long time! I must admit though, the first few weeks, I would go to him when he woke around 5am and bring him to our bed, but now I let him cry a bit and he falls back to sleep himself.  I had such a hard time sleeping without him next to me, I truly think it was harder on me than it was on him! After last night… a full night without any waking… I am convinced we have made the right choice…except- we should have done it a long time ago. I think he is happier now than before, we have less tantrums and tears, he is napping better and he seems to be eating better.

I need to get my butt in gear and jazz up my blog. I have been neglecting it ever since the big switch. Well, I have no excuses now, since I have Wordpress under control and it is no longer a big fear to be anticipated. I am blaming new TV. Even though I have been technically watching less tv… but who can resist Top Chef, Project Runway, 90210 and Josh’s new fave “Glee” — I find it amusing but it really would not peak my interest if he was not obsessive about it. (And I swear, Josh is a man on the outside… inside, however, he is a 13 year old girl. Dont even get me started on his music tastes!) So today and this weekend I am going to make some effort to get things rolling. I have decided I love this theme… but I need some more widgets and I certainly need some Ravelry progress bars… if even just to keep track for myself!
Off to work…
*whistling*
Looking forward to another Gator win this weekend!
