Trip to Cedar Key…

We had been wanting to do something, since summer is nearing an end and the heat is… well, its still damn hot, but the summer is almost over. We almost always go to St. Augustine, this time we decided to go somewhere different… so we went West. The gulf coast… a sweet little dump of a fishing town called Cedar Key. If you have ever wanted to party with random bikers and eat some crappy seafood in a dirty bar… Cedar Key would be heaven for you. Now dont get me wrong, it sure is breathtaking to look out over the water as you sip a Corona and eat some clam chower… it just is not a place you would want to go with  your kids. Okay, if your kids are older– teenage maybe, you could let them roam the postage stamp sized town, while you are enjoying some drinks at the local watering hole, and you could be 100% certain that your kids could not find trouble if they tried! If you have a stroller though, beware that most of the bars are on the second floor… and are not handi-cap accessible. Oh and if you want food? Most of the food can only be found in these 4 bars. So you are limited to carrying your kid and stroller… or you can go to the “dirtier” biker bar down the street that has seats on the first floor, stinks of cigarette smoke and has no servers.

Baby's first trip to the Gulf Coast!

I had a good time though, as I am always one to look on the bright side and make the best of it… which is good, since Josh is not that type and he likes to complain (as much as possible) before he comes around and just relaxes. So after getting a margarita into Josh, we went to the little beach and walked the kiddo around through the sand and the water.  I asked Josh to be a good sport and snap a few pictures of us. I am always the photographer and hardly ever see pictures of myself with my son! I was happy to see that some came out quite nice! Go Josh!

Cedar Key beach

The sand was pretty hot, but he played in it a bit. I kept covering his feet with dry sand — wet sand — he was not a fan and kept kicking it off! There were a lot of kids on the small beach and they were running around playing in the water, making sand castles and just having a blast. I think our little one had the most fun just observing everything around him. Maybe on the next beach trip he will be playing with the bigger kids! For now though he stuck close to Mom.

Another jaunt around town took all of 20 minutes… okay I exaggerrated there. It took about 15 minutes. With nothing else to do and having seen all the sights… we popped into the “Cedar Keyhole” and looked at the local artwork. I was on the hunt for the perfect souveniers, that way we never ever had to return to this wretched little place! I finally decided  on  a piece of hanging driftwood with a seahorse painted on it. At the checkout Josh spied a wooden magnet shaped like a gator with “Cedar Key” etched into it. Perfect!!!

( I will take a picture and insert it into this spot ASAP)

Then we stopped for water, beer and some more snacks. I had award winning clam chowder, Josh had a lovely looking house salad and some peel & eat shrimp. The kiddo ate some black olives and crackers… he threw strawberries, bananas, and more crackers on the floor. Then Josh and I shared a deep fried platter of desserts. Rich and fattening. We then decided to head towards the car and take the long drive home.  I got to the car and realized I had not taking any pictures of the water! It was such a nice day, I insisted and a whining-complaining Josh walked with me a whole twenty feet to the water.

Honeymoon Shack

Honeymoon Shack

This beautiful dream house is called “The Honeymoon Suite”. It is a popular landmark among artists and photographers.  Josh had a great laugh over this. He can not understand why they would not tear down this eye sore. My understanding is that it was a functional building until a hurricane demolished it, then it became a novelty. I like it and I love my pictures. Perhaps one of these days I too will join the ranks of Florida artists who have painted this “Honeymoon Shack” .  It really sums up the whole town… a dilapitated pile of shit, that makes you wonder why no one has cleaned it up, but then you realize it is simply because no one really cares… if they do care enough, they have obviously lost ambition because due to lack of things to do in this town, said individual has since gotten drunk and forgotten all about it.

Cedar Key, Florida 08-30-2009

All in all, as bored as we were in Cedar Key, we had a good day. The baby was well behaved and sweet, we didnt spend a ton of money and we enjoyed some breathtaking views during a gorgeous weather day, and even though it was completely sweltering, we had a good time wandering around the 3 streets of Cedar Key, Florida. I dont think we will ever visit this place again. I feel like both of us have a new appreciation for St. Augustine and its 7-8 streets to wander.  So we headed home, tired and sprinkled with sand. Josh will kill me for blogging this tid-bit but he actually got a bit lost! I nearly threw his blackberry out the car window when he pulled it out to use his GPS! I laughed and laughed!!! I navigated the two blocks to get us out  and we were home in time to enjoy some pre-season football and get my Hyena Cart shop in the works. I got in some good knitting time on the ride to and from… I worked on my Pheasant Run socks mostly. I finished the dreaded ribbing of the second sock and I am nearly to the toe on the first sock.  So a good day all around!

Still working on these socks too. I wish I had more knitting time! I am really not feeling these socks… I have this desire to rip them out and convert them to wrist warmers or something.

It’s the end of the ~gusset~ as we know it…

Still plugging away at the pheasants! These are challenging socks for me, especially since they are my second pair to get this far! The color way is absolutely sexy, but I think I would have preferred something brighter for this pattern. Oh, let me also mention… Toddlers and lace knitting do not mix!

In my future of lace knitting I will be planning projects around vacations and in-law visits. They are not projects I can do on an every-day basis with an active child!

Wonderful Wallaby… finally!

Wonderful wallaby. Size 2T. I wish florida was colder! Here I am knitting a hoodie for my son… he may use it for about 3 months—tops! Anyway… I am making this from some cheap yarn, since he may only get one seasons use out of it. Impeccable worsted.  So far, so good. I am really excited to make one for me and maybe even one for Josh.

A sweet little boy fell asleep in my lap and i was able to finish this crochet project. Can you guess what it is? I will give you a hint… The yarn is mosaic moon, organic gaia bulky in the "poppies" color way… Such a soft and smooshy yarn!

He has Italian blood in him.

He does eat sometimes. Here is the kiddo eating spaghetti marinara, I snuck in some cooked carrots, kidney beans, cheese and olive oil. He finished more than half and the rest was in his lap. Of course I was smart enough to feed this mess to him as he wore a white pocket diaper and a mostly white pj top. Hopefully a soak will get the sauce out!

*edited to add, the diaper is currently soaking in homemade Oxy Clean, wish me luck!

Frustrated-Incorporated…

They say misery loves company
We could start a company and make misery

Frustrated, Incorporated
Well I know just what you need
I might just have the thing
I know what you’d pay to see

Put me out of my misery
I’d do it for you, would you do it for me
We will always be busy making misery

We could build a factory and make misery
We’ll create the cure; we made the disease

Frustrated, Incorporated
Frustrated, Incorporated
Well I know just what you need
I might just have the thing
I know what you’d pay to feel

Put me out of my misery
All you suicide kings and you drama queens
Forever after happily, making misery

Did you satisfy your greed, get what you need
Was it only envy, so empty

Frustrated, Incorporated

This is the song rolling through my head these days. I am burdened by stress right now and it seems to be coming in from every direction.  I am doing my best to think positively, but that is easier said than done! So where do I start???

My son won’t eat. He is not gaining weight and his weight dropped from the 75th percentile to the 10th. His height and head are still on track, but the pediatrician has said I must stop breastfeeding cold-turkey and get him drinking milk. I am at a loss for what I should do. Two days after going to the docs, of course, he came down with a nasty cold. This caused him to eat even less and made me leary about weaning at this time. Add the cold to about 4 teeth pushing through at once, this kid is miserable and I really cant blame him for not wanting to eat. Several times a day I try to get him drinking milk–no luck! Pediasure–no luck! Juice– no luck! He will drink water, but just sips while eating the little bit he does eat. Now as this cold is going away I fear he has lost weight and I am terrified! I have no clue what the best thing for him is. I am attending a La Leche League meeting on Saturday, Sept 5.  and other than that… I just keep feeding him the few things he will eat, broccoli, pancakes, crackers and french fries. I try new things daily and I think we could feed two more kids just on what he tosses to the floor.

Josh. This guy has always been a source of stress and I think he always will be. It seems he always knows when I am vulnerable and capitalizes on it. Here I am stressed about the issues with the baby and he goes and adds to it. I hate to get into details, but I feel like internet poker is the devil’s creation.

Ticks. My son had a tick on him the other day! I absolutley freak out when it comes to any type of bug, but when it comes to parasites, I could seriously rip my own skin off to get away from them. So to see a tick on my son was a traumatic event for me. I am still uneasy anytime I feel an itch! I keep checking my back in the mirror and feeling my scalp…  I feel like I am trapped in a bad OCD horror movie.

Kid at my feet screaming. It seems no matter what I am doing, I have a kid at my feet screaming or whining. It is hard to do your normal things, check email, cook food, clean house with a child latched on to your leg whining and screaming. I imagine if I did wean him this would be much worse… I think he is screaming because he is hungry… ”Hey kid, try eating something, you might feel better!”

I have no clue what to do.

I have been slow to blog lately. I had a few days of depression and now a sick little one. Hopefully things get back to normal soon.

Pheasant Run Socks

08-08-2009 071, originally uploaded by BattleofKnits.

I started a lace sock class today… Pheasant Run socks by Lisa Parker, Wildhorse Farm Designs. I chose Lorna’s Laces Shepard Sock Super Fine in the color 709 Hermosa. I love it! It is very pretty and I think it will look nice with the pattern.

I have a feeling I will be blogging obsessively about these socks, so beware.

Finished, blocked and I love it… This is just what I need to cover up my hair that is in that lovely “growing out” phase. I had a lot of yarn left… I think I will be making the kiddo a hat too.
